Dr. D.R.K. Sastry obtained his M. Sc. Degree in Zoology (Marine Biology), from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam in 1967. His Ph.D. subject was bio-ecology of the sea urchin Stomopneustes variolaris and taxonomy of Indian Echinoidea. After joining Zoological Survey of India, the premier Institution dedicated to Taxonomic study of Indian Fauna, his interest spread from the study of echinoids to asteroids, ophiuroids and crinoids of Indian coast. Among his several publications on the echinoderms of some Indian coastal States, Protected Areas, Coral Reefs etc., the annotated lists of Echinoderms of Andaman & Nicobar Islands and India are the two notable and comprehensive accounts.
